What plasterboard repairs cover

Plasterboard repair work is the umbrella that covers most non-structural plaster damage on a wall or ceiling — patching damaged sheets, re-taping and setting cracked joins, replacing a small section or finishing rough plasterboard after another trade has been through. The right fix depends on whether the damage is on a sheet, on a join, or both.

What's normally involved

  • Damage assessed (sheet, join, or both)
  • Damaged section squared off or re-sheeted
  • Paper tape on all joins, never just filler
  • Set in coats so the patch sits flush with surrounding plasterboard
  • Sanded back to a smooth, paint-ready finish

What photos help estimate it

  • Wide shot of the wall or ceiling involved
  • Close-up of the damaged sheet or join
  • A photo along the length of any cracks
  • Multiple areas? A few spread-out shots
  • Your suburb and rough room size if relevant

Sending photos is the fastest way to a rough price

Send a few clear photos, your suburb and a short description of the damage. For many small plasterboard repair jobs, Kevin from KGW Builds can give a rough estimate before arranging a site visit. Larger or hidden damage may still need a quick inspection.

Patch, re-tape, or re-sheet — what's the difference?

A plasterboard patch is for localised damage on a sheet — a hole, a damaged corner, a small section that's been cut out for an electrical or plumbing repair. The damaged area is cut back, backed, patched and set.

Re-taping and setting a join is for cracks that are following old joins between sheets. Surface fill on these usually comes back within a few months — the proper fix is paper tape and 2–3 coats of set.

Re-sheeting a small section is for damage that runs across more than one sheet, or where the existing plasterboard is no longer sound. New sheets go in, joins are taped, and the new section is set to match the surrounding wall or ceiling.

If you're not sure which one applies, photos make it easy to assess.

FAQ

Common questions about plasterboard repairs

Can you quote a plasterboard repair from photos?

For most plasterboard repairs, yes. A wide shot of the affected wall or ceiling plus a close-up of the damaged sheet or join is usually enough for a rough estimate. Larger sections or anything where the damage may extend behind the sheet may still need a quick on-site look.

Do I need to be home for the plasterboard repair?

Not always. As long as access can be arranged, plasterboard repairs can usually be carried out without you on-site. Pre-paint, post-trade and rental jobs are often handled this way.

Will the repair be ready for painting?

Yes. Standard scope is to hand back the wall or ceiling sanded smooth and ready for paint. Most clients arrange their own painter or do the touch-up themselves.

How long does a plasterboard repair take?

Most patches are a multi-visit job because each set coat needs to dry. Cut, patch and tape one day, set coats over the following days, then sand and finish. The rough estimate will spell out the timing for the specific job.

Is plasterboard the same as gyprock?

In day-to-day use, yes. Gyprock is a brand name that's become shorthand for plasterboard. Both refer to the same paper-faced gypsum sheets used on walls and ceilings.
